Volunteer Spotlight Sobia ShakeelSobia is a former teacher from Pakistan. This is her 2nd year volunteering with AWaH at IPS #96. “I’m getting so much out of my volunteer experience. I love seeing the twinkle in a student’s eyes when they are creating art and learning from it,” said Sobia. She describes her time with AWaH as fulfilling, rewarding and most importantly fun.

One of her favorite AWaH memories so far was when she met a student who called himself, bad boy. “I held his hands and told him, ‘You’re not a bad boy, you’re a very good boy. You’re caring, creative, funny and a very good artist!’ From that day forward he was always ready to prove that what I said about him was right. He is such a creative kid,” said Sobia.

Sobia is a wonderful asset to AWaH and made sure to express her admiration for one of our Site Directors, Kathy Calwell, who nominated her for the spotlight this month!

Thank you Sobia, we are lucky to have you!
